Unfortunately, more and more teens are abusing cough and cold medicines and prescription drugs, often thinking this is a harmless and legal way to have fun.  Using cocaine, meth, or heroin you know is dangerous, but a few pills or a couple doses of cough syrup? Well...

Common prescription medicines being abused include painkillers like hydrocodone and oxycodone, anti-depressants, and ADHD medication.  Cough medicines containing dextromethophan (DXM) as well as cough and cold tablets are also being abused by teens.  These drugs, when abused, can lead to all the short and long term effects listed above - yes, even death.

Teens also report taking these medicines before they drink, or mixing them with soft drinks before alcohol, to help them get drunk faster.  Yet, when they are combined with alcohol, the chances for serious complications and death greatly increase.
